The still images from video footage were taken at the temple festivals at the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kancheepuram and in Mylapore, the Bramotsava Festival at Kapalishvara Temple all in Tamil Nadu from December through March 2002. The video was taken from the perspective of a performative and sculptural point of view. A concentration occurred on the preparations, the people involved, the actual event, along with the events on the periphery, which were at the same time an integral part of the texture of the religious festival. I found that I was making decisions subconsciously on those events which intrigued me, and which I realized later had a strong correlation to my working process and the world I know in my installations and working within the performance world as a set designer. The rationale behind the editing process of the video footage was to show the processes involved leading to the event and the event itself, along with the people involved. This likewise occurred with the choices behind the still images combined with purely an aesthetic rationale.
Where the world is not broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls. Let us be a little humble; let us think that the truth may not be entirely with us; let us cooperate with others; let us, even when we do not appreciate what others say, respect their views and ways of life. Tagore |
